Bard entered the railroad business. He worked as an "assigner," determining when railroad cars arrived and departed. Most cars were transporting coal for Pocahontas Fuel Co. and Mr. Bard joined that business' sales department when he moved to Pleasant Ridge in 1945.

He was promoted to district manager months later, then to assistant district manager Bard, Obituaries nursery and manager for the Cincinnati district. Passionate about gardening and landscaping, Mr. Bard made that his career. He opened Bard Nurseries on weekends with his wife, Jean Brooks, his high school sweetheart whom he married in 1938. In 1969, his son finished Army service and joined his father as co-owner.

That year, Mr. Bard expanded the business, and the father-son firm relocated to Beechmont Avenue. Three grandsons Clint Bob and Doug later worked there. "He was a hard worker, and he loved the landscaping business. Keeping the business in the family was very important to him," his son said.

Mr. Bard eventually turned operations over to his son and retired to play bridge with his wife and travel to their home on Lake Erie. "Going up to the lake with his family was his favorite thing. The whole family would come up, and we would have a weekend devoted to family," daughter-in-law Kathy Bard said. In addition to his wife and son, Mr.
