He was professor of Greek history at the University of Rome from 1932 to 1936 and of Roman history at the University of Turin from 1936 to 1939.
He fled to England in that year after Italy imposed a laws. He did research work at Oxford University and in 1945 returned to Italy as supernumerary professor at the University of Turin. He served from 1951 to 1975 as professor of ancient history at the University College, London. Since 1975, 1 he has taught two quarters a year at the University of Chicago, where he was the Alexander White professor. Other universities where he has been a visiting professor or lectured have been Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Harvard, Princeton the University of California.
Among his early works were "The Emperor Claudius" and "Philip of Macedone." Other works include "Alien Wisdom: The Limits of Hellenization" and "Essays in Ancient and Modern Historiography."
