How Long Do Semi-Permanent Lashes Take To Apply? | plushbeautytraining.com (2024)

Whether you are new to lashing or you have booked your first eyelash extension appointment, you may be wondering how long it takes to apply semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Here is everything you need to know.

It can take up to 2 hours to apply a classic set of semi-permanent eyelashes. The more natural lashes then the longer it will take to apply the extensions. Classic lash extensions are applied by 1:1 ratio to each natural eyelash, meaning they are isolated for a safe application.

The timings for applying semi-permanent lashes will vary depending on the clients’ natural lashes. In this article, I have covered the timings for applying classic lash extensions, how long they last, and how long a safe removal will take.

How Long Does It Take To Apply a Full Set of Semi-Permanent Lashes?

A full set of classic semi-permanent eyelash extensions will take up to 2 hours to apply. These must be applied by a fully qualified eyelash technician. This is a very time consuming treatment so be prepared to be lying down for a minimum of 75 minutes.

This really depends on the number of natural eyelashes there is to cover. With a classic set of eyelash extensions, the aim is to cover at least 90% of the natural lashes. For someone with really healthy and full natural lashes, the application time ouls be around 2 hours. Every single eyelash needs to be isolated and one extension will be attached. Whereas someone with not so good natural lashes and quite sparse may only be getting treated for around 1 hour to 1 and a half hours.

Understanding Why It Takes 2 Hours To Apply Eyelash Extensions

Each person typically has about 90 to 160 natural hair lashes per eye on the upper eyelids with the average natural eyelash length being around 8-10 mm long. Our lashes grow in 3 rows and have a lifespan of 60 to 90 days.

Natural lashes go through a shedding process on a regular basis. Quite often we call it the Autumn or Spring shed. We will require more frequent maintenance appointments during this stage.
The natural eyelash grows for approximately 30 days and then rests for the remainder of its life span. The average life span of an eyelash is 3 months. Your lash technician will increase the lifespan of the extensions by isolating healthy lashes that are in the middle stage of their growth cycle.

How Long Does It Take To Apply a Half Set of Semi-Permanent Lashes?

How Long Do Semi-Permanent Lashes Take To Apply? | plushbeautytraining.com (1)

Applying a half set of eyelash extensions takes around half the time as a full set. Half a set of eyelash extensions can be applied in around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

A half set of eyelash extensions is an alternate to a full set. These will appear more natural but will still add length and thickness. This would be a perfect treatment as an introduction to eyelash extensions.

If you are going for a half set of eyelash extensions then be prepared to be back at the salon quicker for an in-fill appointment. Typically you would go for your first infill just 10 – 14 days after your first half set. This appointment would last 30 minutes and is perfect for a lunch break.

How Long Does It Take To Do a Semi-Permanent Eyelash Top Up?

We recommend that clients return for an infill appointment 2 weeks post-treatment. This allows you to see how the natural lashes are and a maintenance plan can be made from here. Typically, the infill appointments will be every 2-3 weeks to maintain their desired look. This will usually take 30 to 45 mins. Perfect for a lunch break appointment.

I offer my own clients a few options; If the infill is with 2 weeks from the original appointment this will be a 30-minute infill and If the infill appointment is within 3 weeks from the original appointment, this will be 45 minutes.

Your eyelash technician will only treat the lashes if they have been looked after properly. Good Tip – don’t skip your infill appointment otherwise you may need to have a fresh full set applied again. Keep on top of your maintenance appointments and saved yourself some money.

How Long Do Semi-Permanent Eyelashes Last?

A fresh, full set of semi-permanent eyelash extensions should last 6 to 8 weeks. Your natural eyelashes grow in a cycle and when it is time for these to shed, then the eyelash extensions grow out with them.

People tend to think that eyelash extensions just fall off, but this is not the case when done professionally. Eyelash extensions should never be picked off or pulled at. Doing this will damage your natural eyelash extensions, causing damage to the hair follicle which could result in permanent damage causing the hair to never grow back!

Although semi-permanent eyelash extensions can last up to 6 weeks, if you do not maintain your eyelashes by attending top-up or infill appointments then these will look very sparce and a small amount will be left still adhered to the natural lash.

You can prolong the life of your eyelash extensions by following the correct aftercare and homecare advive given by your eyelash technician. Doing this will really make a difference and will certainly keep your lashes looking fuller for longer. Some steps you should be folllowing include:

  • Do not get your new eyelash extensions wet for at least 24 hours. If you can manage 48 hours, this would really make a difference.
  • Avoid any heat treatments for 48 hours, for example, sunbeds, saunas, and steam rooms.
  • Avoid touching and rubbing your eyes. This will cause irritation, resulting in sensitization or inflammation around the eye are.
  • Brush through your eyelashes every morning and use a lash cleanser every 2 to 3 days.
  • Book regular top-up or infill appointments (every 2 to 3 weeks)

If you are not a professional and reading this – Do Not try and remove your eyelash extensions at home. You will damage your natural lashes, leaving them looking bald. Make sure you book in for a removal when its time for your eyelash extensions to come off. This procedure is quick and should be painless.

If you cannot get to a salon for an eyelash extension removal then you may want to ask your lash technician if there are any at home removal kits. These normally work well and although it will take longer than going to a salon, this is a safe procedure and will save you damaging your natural eyelashes.

A special gel remover is used. This breaks down the adhesive bond and after a short time, the eyelash extensions will slide off. There should not be any pain or discomfort. If there is then let the eyelash technician know.

If there is a lot of eyelash extensions to be removed then this may take a little longer but typically a removal is done once the eyelash extensions have been on for some time so there tends to be a small amount to remove.
